Reach new heights

Reach new heights

Sail Training brings out the best in of all of us; facing challenges such as working aloft, knowing that somebody must do the job. Research from the University of Edinburgh in 2006 showed that Sail Training increased self confidence, and that this confidence was still evident long after the voyage had ended.

UK Sail Training Youth Committee (STYC)

STYC's committee comprises representatives aged 25 or under from Sail Training organisations in the UK to support ASTO's work by driving forward the promotion of UK Sail Training. STYC’s main aim is to ensure that as many young people as possible are aware of and are also able to experience Sail Training.

ASTO exists to promote Sail Training and to support the provision of Sail Training opportunities in the United Kingdom. We believe that everybody, regardless of age, ability, background or status should be able to experience the challenge and adventure that Sail Training offers.

One for all and......

One for all and......

The team work required to run a Sail Training vessel produces amazing results. With many vessels purpose-built for Sail Training you can easily find a vessel that will enable people of all abilities to take a full roll, including wheelchair access to the top of a square rigged ship's mast!

Part of a larger International Family

Part of a larger International Family

Each year 3 people who have sailed on UK Sail Training voyages are selected to take part in International Exchanges. The Australian Exchange gives the opportunity to sail onboard the brigantine 'Young Endeavour'. The Canadian Exchange provides the chance to sail on one of the excellent school ships popular in the USA and Canada.

From the mouths of babes...

From the mouths of babes...

Despite the complexity of many Sail Training vessels, no experience is required. The professional crew are trained to coach you, ensuring you take an active role. Most organisations take youth and school groups to sea, and realise that for many of the people onboard, it is their first time away from home.

UK Sail Training

UK Sail Training

Sail Training is fun, accessible, challenging, exciting and diverse. It uses the experience of being at sea as a means of helping people of all ages and abilities learn about themselves, discover hidden strengths and talents and understand the value of working together as a team, building character and an ability to confront life's challenges.

Broaden your horizons

Broaden your horizons

Whether it is the remote Western Isles of Scotland or the sun drenched Islands of the Caribbean there will be a UK Sail Training vessel that sails in that area. But don't limit your horizons to geography. Many volunteers within Sail Training see a whole new side to life after sailing with crew mates from very different backgrounds to their own.

This day in Parliament, arranged through OYT Scotland Ambassador Stuart McMillan MSP, was an excellent opportunity to highlight that work. Nick Fleming, Chief Executive of OYT Scotland said, “It’s important that we showcase the excellent work that OYT Scotland does and the positive impact this has on young people’s lives.”
