The challenge of climbing the masts to set the powerful square sails is an experience you will never forget.  The UK Sail Training fleet has a number of square rigged ships taking young people from the age of 13 up to people in their 70s.  There are also wheelchair friendly vessels.

These modern rigged vessels provide some of the fastest and most exhilarating sailing in the fleet.  Despite their modern rigs they still rely on manpower to hoist, set and trim their sails; not forgetting of course the need to run the domestic routines - cooking, cleaning and maintenance.

The heavy wooden rigs on these vessels require teamwork to ensure the vessel can be sailed to its best advantage. Within the traditional fleet there are contemporary replicas, only a few years old, sailing alongside graceful old ladies well into their second century.
