The 17 berth Excelsior has the dual function of sail training and active museum ship and is operated by the Cirdan Sailing Trust. One of the last of the famous British sailing trawlers to be built, her design incorporated many labour saving devices for fishing the North Sea in all weathers with a minimum crew. Today Excelsior is fully restored on deck and completely rebuilt below with all the necessary modern requirements. Trainees do not need previous sailing experience, although they are expected to join the experienced regular crew in working the ship. Time on board can count towards RYA qualifications. Voyages range from one day tasters to participating in the STI Tall Ships' Races and other maritime events around the western seaboard of Europe. See our web site, or ask for details of the sailing programs, which vary each year. A small bursary fund is sometimes available if you need help. Voyages can be planned to meet specific requirements if you can make contact with us far enough in advance. In sailing a 100 ton traditionally rigged commercial sailing vessel, trainees are keeping alive our maritime heritage in the challenging environment of the sea - and having a jolly good time in the process!
