What is the Skippership Scheme 2010?
The ASTO Skippership Scheme is a structured programme that draws together the skills required to work as a sea-going Sail Trainer in the modern Sail Training industry. Professional training is delivered by some of the UK's leading sailing technicians with maritime colleges delivering the MCA recognised safety courses.
Although the opportunity to take part in the scheme is open to anyone involved in and committed to Sail Training, the emphasis of the scheme has changed this year whereby priority will be given to people who have been 'adopted' by an ASTO member organisation.
What does adopted mean?
Applicants must have at least a seasonal arrangement with an ASTO member organisation, preferably as a member of sea-going staff, but this could be an unpaid position. The organisation agrees to support the applicant’s training and development throughout the training period of the scheme (between 9 and 18 months from the initial induction week).
What does the scheme comprise?
The Scheme commences in February each year and aims to produce commercially endorsed Yachtmasters Offshore, with the additional skills to sail as Mate on a Sail Training vessel.
PRACTICAL COURSES will be accomplished in three modules:
MODULE 1
7-Day Introduction
A practical session, establishing competence level and producing individual training plans
MODULE 2
14-day Training and Development
Trainees expected to have accomplished the pre-requisite shorebased courses** to take Yachtmaster Coastal Exam
| MODULE 3 |
14-day Training and Development
Skippered passages culminating in Yachtmaster Offshore exam
| MODULE 4 |
14-day if required
For trainees not attaining Yachtmaster in Module 3
Between these scheduled modules, general practical experience, tailored to the trainees needs and the requirements of the scheme, will be provided to the trainee by their adopting organisation.
SHOREBASED COURSES **: Will be completed locally at the adopting organisation’s convenience to allow flexibility to the training and minimise the impact on the adopting organisation. In addition to these courses, training in soft skills (e.g. working with young people, diversity, assessing outcomes) will also be delivered.
What do I need to qualify and how do I apply?
Potential trainees are required to meet the following criteria AND have a working relationship (paid or voluntary) with an ASTO member organisation that is willing to 'adopt' them for the duration of the scheme. Applications to the scheme should be made through your member organisation.
