Trinity House

The Corporation of Trinity House is the General Lighthouse Authority for England and Wales, with responsibility for nearly 600 Aids to Navigation from traditional features such as lighthouses, buoys and beacons to the latest satellite navigation technology. In addition it inspects over 10,000 local Aids to Navigation provided by port and harbour authorities, and on offshore structures.

Incorporated by Royal Charter in 1514, Trinity House is also a major maritime charity, engaged in the welfare of mariners, education and training, the promotion of safety at sea, and its role as a Deep Sea Pilotage Authority.

As part of its charitable activities, the Corporation generously supports ASTO member organisations by providing substantial funding for grants to their Sail Training staff and volunteers who wish to become qualified as mates and masters, or increase their current qualification set.

Under the bursary scheme, ASTO members put forward suitable applicants who are working in Sail Training and wish to gain both RYA and MCA qualifications. A joint ASTO/Trinity House Awards Panel then interviews the candidates and if suitable the cost of their training and examinations is met by the Trinity House bursary fund.

Eligibility
Full criteria for eligibility are detailed in the 'Guidance Notes for Applicant'

Course Selection
Selected courses must reflect a recognised career progression to the next Certificate of Competency (CoC), developing your overall skill set and ability. See Fig 1 in Guidance Notes (available for download below).

Ensure that you select all of the courses required to achieve the CoC applied for.  RYA course guidance can be found in the RYA Logbook (G15).  Guidance for the MCA STCW'95 CoC's is detailed in the MCA publication MSN 1802(M) CoC Yacht Deck Officers Training and Certification Guidance - Part A7.

Please research the relevant publication prior to making your selection.

Applications for individual courses, updates, or instructional qualifications are not acceptable.

The training requested should develop the overall skill set and ability of the applicant, and represent a genuine improvement in their competence.   For example, training to move from RYA Costal Skipper to RYA Yachtmaster, or to make the transition from RYA Yachtmaster to STCW '95 OOW(Yachts limited to 3000T) would meet this requirement.  Applications for short courses alone, updates, or instructional qualifications will not be accepted.
