Refit volunteers - John Laing |

Employer: |
Ocean Youth Trust South
Posts: |
Refit volunteers (2) | |
Location: |
Southampton | |
Closing Date: |
30th October 2008 | |
Details: |
John Laing will be undergoing a substantial refit between November 2008 and March 2009. OYT South is ideally looking for two long-term volunteers to join the team for the full four and a half months, but will also consider volunteers who could join for a minimum of a month during this time. This might be an ideal opportunity for someone planning a gap year or a career break, or looking to move into the sail training industry: the majority of our previous core team refit volunteers have gone on to paid sailing work. Volunteers will receive food and accommodation, as well as experience in boat repairs and maintenance. Ideally volunteers will be aged 18+ although we may consider applications from 17-year olds. Practical skills in any aspect of boat maintenance will be an advantage but not essential. What is vital is that core team volunteers should be hard-working, responsible and enthusiastic. The team will all be living together in a rented refit house and it is vital that volunteers are also prepared to take responsibility for a share of cooking and cleaning in the house. |

Junior Skipper/First Mate - John Laing |

Ocean Youth Trust South
Post: |
Junior Skipper/First Mate
Location: |
Southampton / south coast plus occasional longer voyages
Closing Date: |
30th October 2008 | |
Details: |
Because of the increased workload faced by our senior staff skipper, and in order to add continuity during both the refit and the sailing season, OYT South intends to recruit a junior skipper at the end of the current season. This person will work under the direction of staff skipper Mark Todd, helping to manage the refit, skippering John Laing as needed but also sailing as first mate or in other roles as required, and assisting the charity in other ways - for example, pre-voyage preparation with clients. The post might be an ideal step for someone relatively new to skippering a sail training vessel, and may be a suitable for a newly-qualified skipper or an experienced first mate who is ready to make the step up. It might also suit someone moving up from smaller boats. |
