Not only did Ralph Hammond Innes leave a considerable sum of money to ASTO, but ASTO also own the copyright to his many books and films. This includes money from the Public Lending Rights (PLR) scheme. Every time a Hammond Innes book is borrowed from a public library a small amount of money is payable to the author, or the owner of the copyright. The PLR scheme is funded by the government to the tune of £7m in 2003. The rate per loan changes each year but for 2002-2003 it was the mighty sum of £4.85p. In this year Hammond Innes' books were loaned from libraries 104,236 times producing an additional income for ASTO of over £5,055. There is an upper payment threshold to any author of £6,000, so if the books were borrowed 19,485 times more ASTO would be £945 better off; so what are you waiting for?!
The Cambridge University Library has recently acquired, as a generous gift from the executors of his estate through the Friends of the Library, the papers and correspondence of Hammond Innes.
