Sailing Links
RYA Sailability was founded in 1995 to develop boating opportunities for people with disabilities throughout Britain. Sailing is almost unique as an outdoor activity that minimises rather than accentuates disability. By using adapted boats and equipment, disabled sailors can enjoy the same freedom and exhilaration as their non-disabled compatriots.
To encourage proper standards of safety and the right facilities to meet the needs of disabled sailors, RYA Sailability has introduced its Foundation Scheme in which sailing clubs' onshore facilities are assessed together with their ability to provide effective volunteer support for at least one class of disability. Should they lack any aspect of training or equipment then RYA Sailability will help to rectify that shortfall both through financial support and by providing training. They also encourage all clubs to become RYA Training Centres so as to provide disabled sailors with the same learning opportunities as able-bodied. RYA Sailability's Information Programme includes a Directory of Equipment & Services, a Where to Go Sailing Guide listing clubs with facilities for disabled sailors and our quarterly magazine, Foghorn.
