The ASTO Skippership Scheme is a structured programme that draws together the skills required to work as a sea-going Sail Trainer in the modern Sail Training industry. Professional training is delivered by some of the UK's leading sailing technicians with maritime colleges delivering the MCA recognised safety courses. Although the opportunity to take part in the scheme is open to anyone involved in and committed to Sail Training, priority will be given to people who have been 'adopted' by an ASTO member organisation.
What does 'adopted' mean?
Applicants must have at least a seasonal arrangement with an ASTO member organisation, preferably as a member of sea-going staff, but this could be an unpaid position. The organisation agrees to support the applicant’s training and development throughout the training period of the scheme (between 9 and 18 months from the initial induction week).
What does the Scheme comprise?
The Scheme will consist of practical training at the beginning of the sailing season with the candidates ideally passing the Yachtmaster Coastal. They will then sail with their adopted organisation and other ASTO member vessels through the Summer.
The related short courses that are required for commercial endorsement can be completed either before or during the sailing season, at the convenience of the trainee.
The Scheme will conclude in October when the candidates should be ready for their Yachtmaster Offshore Exam.
What do I need to qualify and how do I apply?
Potential trainees are required to meet the following criteria AND have a working relationship (paid or voluntary) with an ASTO member organisation that is willing to 'adopt' them for the duration of the Scheme. Applications to the Scheme should be made through your member organisation. Member organisation to contact ASTO for further information.
