Small Ships' Race

Introduction

The ASTO Small Ships' Race is a youth event open to monohull sailing vessels up to 120ft in length. The inaugural race from Weymouth to St. Malo in 2002 was deemed to be a tremendous success by all involved. Since then host ports include Ipswich, Delfzijl, Glasgow, Belfast and Cowes.

Each year ASTO hold a summer passage making race, with two host ports, and an October Solent based race with Cowes as the host port. Follow the links on the right to see the reports of previous races.

The races are open to ASTO members and non-members alike. Minimum waterline length for entries is 7.3m (24ft). The races are sailed under the Racing and Sailing Rules issued by Sail Training International with any amendments or variations issued in the Notice to Race. At least half of all of those on board during the race must be 25 years old or under. The entry fee for each race is £50 per vessel.

ASTO Small Ships' Race - Cowes 2008

A star-studded line up, led by Alan Titchmarsh, started the 2008 Cowes Small Ships' Race. The racing was amongst the closest we have seen for a few years, with a few surprises in the final results. Download the race report and the full list of prizes awarded. (PDF)

The 2009 race will be held on 2nd to 4th October. Entry forms and notice of race will be available shortly. Please e-mail the ASTO Office if you would like to receive copies once they are available.
