Sail Training International is a global charity dedicated to the development and education of young people of all nationalities, religions and social backgrounds, through sail training. It achieves this purpose by working with the sail training organisations of some 20 countries worldwide, to promote the benefits of sail training to the youth of the world.
Sail Training International also organises the STI Tall Ships' Races that take place annually during the summer holidays with a key rule being that 50% of each vessel's crew must be aged between 15 and 25 years. Primarily the Races are held in European waters but are occasionally held across the Atlantic or in other parts of the world. Each year some 70-100 vessels take part in this unique event, combining four days of activities in each port with racing or Cruising-in-Company between ports. During the Race Series, the young crews get the chance to gain experience by sailing with their contemporaries from other countries while facing the physical and emotional challenges that only the ocean can provide.
Many of the ASTO members take part in the STI Tall Ships' Races every year, helping to bring together some 5,000 to 6,000 young people from all over the world in friendly competition in an event that for many is seen as a life-changing experience.
